Free stuff to do!

There are many activities on our island that are free. We can help with hikes throughout the island from Waimea - Kokee State parks to Kalalau Trail, wonderful coastline or heritage trails and hidden beaches. Guide books and maps are in the office for your use. There are free hula shows in the Poipu area, wonderful farmer's markets and much more! Scroll down for more information.

Kauai Beaches

Visitors to Kauai would need a long stay indeed, to take advantage of all the wonderful beaches that are available. All beaches and coastlines are for the public. Not only does Kauai have great beaches with world class surfing and snorkeling, we also have some of the best hidden getaway beaches in the world.

Brennecke's Beach, world famous for body surfing, is a quick walk along the coastline from Po'ipu Plantation. Next to Brennecke's is Po'ipu Beach and Park , a great place to begin your snorkel. Po'ipu Beach is ideal for children to experience the water at Keiki (children's) beach and enjoy the new play area of Po'ipu Beach park.  The remote Maha'ulepu Beach is 15 minutes away by car or a 2.5 mile coastline walk.  Other walk t beaches such as Secret or Larsen's in the north are well worth walk!  Along the way, you will see Kealia and Anahola beach and too many others to name.  To the West from Poipu is our Salt Pond Beach Park with protected swimming and snorkeling, the white sand beaches of Kekaha and end of the road, the amazing Poli Hale state beach park.

Hiking and Walking on Kauai

Our neighborhood is a wonderful place for morning walks and runs for the more energetic of visitors.  From our place, walk up the street to Makauena Point for great views at Kauai south point.  A perfect spot to watch the whales in season and enjoy the rhythm of the ocean.  Walking our small street toward Poipu Beach park and continue along the water past other resorts to the Sheraton.  You will enjoy seeing the Green Sea Turtles most always in the bay on our first corner and Dolphins in the surf.

We are hikers and are familiar with most of the trails around Kauai.  Right here in Poipu, we all enjoy the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail to the east and remote beach with archeological sites or the Hapa trail into our town of Koloa through the ancient Koloa Field System.

Waimea Canyon to our west consists of Waimea and Kokee state Parks.  Within the parks are 10 or more hikes from .75 miles, a rim hike of 3 miles, the Alakai Swamp (highest on earth), a mystical 7 miles, the Nualolo Ridge trail over the western pali loop to the Awapuhipuhi trail, overlook the Western shoreline from 2000 foot elevation. 

Moving north from Poipu on the east side is the Nounou Trail (Sleeping Giant) and beyond at the Keahua Arboretum (Jurassic Park), the Kuilau Ridge trail.  A new addition to Kauai is our in progress Kauai Coastal Path for walks or rent a bike and explore miles of the eastern coastline.  Many other hikes going north to the end at Ke'e Beach in Haiena is the world class Kalalau Trail to Hanakapiai Beach and Falls.

Botanical Gardens and shopping in the Poipu area

Within a few minutes drive from Poipu Plantation are the National Tropical Botanical Gardens.  Allerton garden tours are offered daily as well as Mc Bryde Garden, home to the largest ex situ collection of native Hawaiian flora in existence. At no charge, visitors can wander through the lush gardens at the Allerton visitor center, across from Spouting Horn. There is no shortage of shopping right here in the Poipu area, at the Poipu Shopping Village, the new Kukuiula Village and Historic Koloa Town.  Groceries are nearby in Koloa and several local shops for snorkel, bicycle and surf board rentals.

World Class Golf

Two of the most popular golf courses on Kauai, the Kiahuna and Poipu Bay (home of the PGA Grand Slam) are within a mile of Poipu Plantation. Kukuiolono 9 hole course for under $10 is our little secret.   You can save with twilight times here in Poipu, or at The Kauai Lagoons and Princeville Golf Courses.

The awesome beauty of Kauai's interior can best be experienced by taking a zip-line or tubing adventure through the jungle with one of several outstanding tour companies.

A note about Napali Coast Boat and whale watch tours. 

We suggest Napali tours from the South and West shore departures of Port Allen or Kikiaola boat Harbors.  The drive early morning is 30 to 45 minutes and represents 99% of the tour operators.  One or two tours advertise departures from the Hanalei

bay area of our north.  This is a 1 1/2 to 2 hour drive from Poipu Beach.  These operators notoriously cancel last minute for various reasons.  Only those staying in the north should consider these tours

Most paid activities are offering web only specials on their web sites.  We cannot do better than most of those prices.  We suggest dealing direct with those providers and are happy to share our knowledge.

Kamokila Hawaiian village - tours, kayaks, canoe tours
	Located `1/2 way up the Wailua River on a replicated Hawaiian Village, we recommend this as the best Kayak option.  No need for guided tours.  Starting at the village will save 2 hours of paddling to enjoy more of the surrounding wilderness.  Across from Fern Grotto, paddle to the rope swing and to the secret waterfall hike.  We are happy to call for you after arrival.
